The people of the IKTEO of Xanthi emphasize that private cars undergo a vehicle inspection every 2 years, provided they have completed the first 4 years since their initial registration. Additionally, they presented to us the vehicle inspection process and how it has been simplified and accelerated, both to inform older drivers and to educate newer vehicle owners.
Let’s take a look at the inspection process step-by-step:

Vehicle reception: As soon as we arrive at the facility, the KTEO staff welcomes us with a big smile to receive our vehicle.

Photographing the vehicle: The inspection process begins with taking photographs of our vehicle. At this point, the data connection with the ministry is established, and the pre-registered vehicle information is cross-checked. It’s worth noting that the minimum time allocated by the ministry for the vehicle inspection is 15 minutes for motorcycles, 20 minutes for cars (plus 5 minutes if the car runs on LPG), and 30 to 45 minutes for trucks (depending on the number of axles). For ADR vehicles (trucks carrying hazardous materials) and buses, which require special attention, the minimum inspection time is 50 minutes.

Lighting inspection: Next, using a photometer, the inspectors check whether our vehicle’s lighting system is functioning properly.

Exhaust gas measurement: The next step is measuring the exhaust gases. This stage is very important because our vehicle must keep its emissions within a specific limit (set by legislation). The emissions card issued is valid for one year, and passenger cars (ΙΧ) are required to undergo this check annually.

Brake test: Finally, our vehicle is tested on the brake tester for all its axles to ensure everything is functioning according to the regulations.

Placement of the inspection sticker: A sticker called ESTE (Indicative Technical Inspection Mark) is placed on the rear license plate. This serves as a visible confirmation for the authorities that the vehicle has undergone the legal inspection and no serious or dangerous deficiencies were found.
The goal of private vehicle inspection centers (IKTEO) is to make drivers’ lives better—and above all, easier. The dedicated teams at these centers make sure to remind us when our vehicle’s inspection is due, so we can schedule our appointment on time, at a day and hour that suits us best, without waiting or unnecessary delays. Additionally, if during the inspection a fault is found that prevents certification, they offer a free re-inspection within one month.
To make our short wait at the IKTEO facilities more pleasant, there is always a cup of freshly brewed, steaming coffee available, charging stations for our mobile devices, free Wi-Fi, laptops for internet browsing, air-conditioned spaces that offer coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter, as well as outdoor areas for relaxation and smoking. At the private IKTEOs of Xanthi, special care has been taken to accommodate people with mobility challenges (persons with disabilities – PwD).
As a valuable tip, the staff at the KTEOs remind us to have our vehicle inspections done on time every two years in order to avoid paying the related fine to the state, which can increase the inspection fee by up to 200%. Finally, to facilitate the process, the KTEO staff emphasize that we should always remember to bring with us the vehicle registration document — the most important paper for the car — a driver’s license or an ID card, and the previous inspection document, if available.
